Simply stated, Tour de Faith is an organized road trip to Sunday mass. Beyond that, it is a window into the great diversity that is present in the many churches that Catholics gather in each Sunday for Mass. We've selected a few churches that are well known for some unique characteristics like outstanding music, social outreach or hospitality and we've scheduled a few dates to attend particular liturgical experiences that will highlight some aspects of Catholicism that most of us would not be familiar with from our own parishes. Join us for one or several dates on the Tour! |
October 5, 2008- Sunday Mass at Sacred Heart Church in Joliet. Sacred Heart Church is a very small, very simple, old Catholic church on Joliet's east side. The congregation is ethnically diverse, but the Black Catholic presence is most powerful especially in the Gospel music. The pastor and a lot of the members of Sacred Heart are very involved in the community, providing meals, advocacy and a place for various addiction support groups to meet. Mass starts at about 10:15 AM and lasts as long as it needs to last- maybe an hour and a half. On this particular Sunday, the parish will host visitors at it's monthly "Coffee And" breakfast afterwards. Transportation can be provided. Please email Kevin if you need a ride. If you will be driving, email me to let me know if you need directions. |
| February 2009- Sunday Mass at St. Sabina's Church in Chicago. St. Sabina's is a real community powerhouse- working for justice, serving the needs of the poor and fighting the influence of gangs, drugs and crime in their neighborhood. It is a community that clearly works to put faith into action. Since February is Black History Month, they will likely have some significant speakers during the Mass. Plan to give up the better part of your day to participate in this trip- Mass at St. Sabina's takes as long as they think it needs to take- often more than four hours. |
