Auxiliary Bishop Roger L. Kaffer
 

A Joliet native who attended the Cathedral of St. Raymond Grade School, Auxiliary Bishop Roger L. Kaffer was ordained a priest May 1, l954, at the Cathedral of St. Raymond by Bishop Martin D. McNamara. In 1985, he was ordained a bishop by Bishop Joseph L. Imesch. He studied for the priesthood at Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago and continued his studies at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, where he received bachelor's and master's degrees and a licentiate and bachelor of sacred theology. He studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome where he received a licentiate of canon law. He received a master's degree in education from DePaul University and a doctorate of ministry from St. Mary of the Lake.

Among his positions in the diocese, he was assistant chancellor at the Joliet Chancery, founding rector of St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, principal of Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox and rector of the Cathedral of St. Raymond. He also served at St. Paul the Apostle, St. Raymond, St. Anthony, St. Bernard and St. Joseph parishes in Joliet as a priest and lived with the brothers at Montini High School, Lombard, and at St. Joseph Parish, Downers Grove, and Notre Dame Parish in Clarendon Hills as a bishop.
