Based on the Bishops’ Pastoral: "Welcoming the Stranger Among Us: Unity in Diversity”, Giaocchino Campese, CS, challenged dioceses and parishes to become truly “Catholic”, meaning open and inclusive and appreciative of the gifts each culture brings. Integrating (not assimilating) cultures is a very difficult process that takes time, intentionality and effective strategies.

We live in a globalized society profoundly affected by increased migration due to poverty, political strife and wars. 

 


 

About the Author...

Gioacchino Campese was born and raised in Italy. He joined the Missionaries of St. Charles (Scalabrinians) in 1987.

He has studied in Manila, Phillipines, and at Catholic Theological Union, Chicago. He is currently a Ph.D. student in systematic Theology at the Lutheran School of Theology, Chicago.

Gioacchino ministered at the Casa del Migrante in Tijuanna at the California-Mexico border. He is the author of “Walk Humbly With Your God! Notes on Spirituality for Missionaries with Migrants,” Missiology 25:2 (1997) 131-140; The Way of the Cross of the Migrant Jesus, a bilingual Via Crucis (English and Spanish) published by Centro de Pastoral Migratoria Scalabrini in Tijuana, Mexico; and editor of Migration, Globalization and Religious Experience published by the Center for Migration Studies in New York, 2003.
