Press Release 4/2/2005: Statement from Bishop Imesch on the Death of Pope John Paul II FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Sister Judith A. Davies, OSF 815-722-6606 STATEMENT FROM BISHOP IMESCH ON THE DEATH OF POPE JOHN PAUL II Joliet, IL Bishop Joseph L. Imesch released the following statement today regarding the death of Pope John Paul II. “The most powerful voice for peace and justice in the world is now silent. The Church of Joliet joins with the Church Universal, indeed with all people of good will, to mourn the loss of Pope John Paul II. Over the past 27 years never has there been a voice so consistent in calling for respect for life for every individual. The dignity of every human creature has been the constant theme of John Paul II, whether he visited countries with democratically-elected governments or those ruled by dictators.” “Is there a person in the world who was more respected than John Paul II? He visited 129 countries and traveled hundreds of thousands of miles, not only to preach the Good News, but to call for respect for the human person. Oftentimes, his was a lonely voice calling for peace and cooperation.” “We remember the vigor and energy of the young Pope, and his remarkable ability to connect with young people. For many, he was the only Pope they had known. We remember the determination and strength of an old Pope suffering illness,” said Imesch. “We remember the Pope who skied and the Pope who hiked, as well as the Pope who was moved about on a portable chair and whose words were spoken by others. Through it all, he was our Pope, the steady guide whose voice instilled confidence in the Catholic community and received respect even from those who did not believe.” Imesch stated that in observance of the Pope’s death, each parish in the diocese is asked to offer a Mass today for John Paul II at a time that is convenient for parishioners to attend. From now until the day of the burial, a special prayer is to be offered for the Pope during all Masses. He added that church bells are to be tolled each evening for one minute following the evening Angelus. The bishops of the Diocese plan to celebrate a special Mass for the Holy Father at the Cathedral in Joliet, at St. Rose in Kankakee and at Sts. Peter and Paul in Naperville on the day of the Pope’s burial. The times of these Masses will be announced. Imesch concluded his remarks with, “May the Lord whom he served so faithfully for so many years now grant him the promise of eternal life given to all those who believe.” # # # # # |
