YAM Weekly Advent Podcast

Advent is a time of expectant waiting and hopeful anticipation before Christmas. We’re waiting for God to come into our lives as a baby and watching for God’s presence in the world around us. We have listed a few things that will help you prepare for this special season that is all about preparing our hearts for the coming of Christ. How will you live Advent this year?

Advent Practices

There are a few Advent practices that can help best prepare our hearts and minds for the Advent season. Here are a few examples of Advent practices that you can try this season:

Advent Wreath: One of the best ways to prepare for the Advent season is to light an Advent wreath for each week of Advent. Lighting the candles every week is usually accompanied by prayers. Here is an example of prayers that may be used when lighting the Advent wreath:

Advent Calendar: Similar to the advent devotional, an advent calendar helps countdown the days to Christmas. Usually there could be chocolate or candy in an Advent calendar but perhaps reading a prayer or reading an Advent devotional could be used to supplement the use of an Advent calendar.

Advent Penance Services: Advent is also referred to as a little Lent so one of the best ways to participate in the Advent season is to participate in an advent penance service. Confession is a way of drawing us closer to Christ during the season. Many parishes offer advent penance services - find a parish in our diocese near you.

Advent Devotional: Another way of building up one’s relationship with God during Advent is to read from an Advent devotional. This can take different forms. You could check out a book of Advent devotionals or sign up for a digital Advent daily reflection series. Check out the sections on Advent resources and thoughtful websites and articles to learn more about Advent devotionals:
